Area-wide AIDS committee created to coordinate effort
With the combined influence of Cleveland's Mayor White, the three Cuyahoga County commissioners, and officers from the Cleveland and George Gund Foundations, a new area-wide steering committee was created to assess the AIDS epidemic in the Greater Cleveland area.
The diverse 13-member Citizen's Committee on AIDS-HIV met for the first time on October 30 and began to plan its strategy. The task is primarily to determine the state and availability of services for those in the HIV spectrum. In the process, the group hopes to bridge the goals of the various, often competing AIDS service agencies and develop a spirit of cooperation throughout the area. Organizers also want to see this committee as a focal point that will raise the visibility and call more attention to the AIDS crisis in the greater Cleveland area.
The committee is expected to work to-
gether for at least an 18-month period. Members represent a wide spectrum of Cleveland's movers and shakers, along with two people infected with HIV, to keep the group's focus on the issue.
Members of the committee are: Josephine Abady, director of the Cleveland Play House; Robert Bann, executive director of North Coast Harbor; community activist Teresa Embry; businessman Victor Gelb; Tony Harris, WKYC-TV reporter; Rev. Bill Johnson, Secretary for AIDS Programs and Ministries Coordination, United Church of Christ; Kathy Lewis, Case Western Reserve University trustee; Joseph Interrante, director of the Health Issues Taskforce; businessman Eric Nilson; Dr. David P. Stevens, CWRU chief of internal general medicine; health educator Stephen R. Sroka; and two HIV infected individuals, Josh Stier and Arlene Early-Terry.
Join us for the Nutcracker, or a nutty time on New Year's
Through a special arrangement with the Cleveland Ballet, you can join your friends and the Chronicle in a group of orchestra seats for the Sunday, December 13, performance of the Nutcracker at a reduced price.
Or, for a festive start to the new year, see the comedy version of this holiday classic, the Nutty Nutcracker performance on December 31, also with orchestra seats at a reduced price.
The Nutty Nutcracker has become a Cleveland Ballet tradition on its own, with the dancers appearing in strange and wild costumes, and with lots of inside humor and silliness--the perfect send-up of the holiday tale. The show runs from 8:30 to 10:30 so you have plenty of time to head for any New Year's Eve party. But the party you may want to attend takes place in the State Theatre lobby right after the show! It's a non-alcoholic gala where your $30 cost includes: spectacular hors d'oeuvres and dessert, the "world's largest" eggnog, ice cream sundae and soda bar; a fortune teller; a silent auction; a complimentary 5 by 7
photo with Father Time; party decorations, favors and balloons; the band "77 South;" dancing to all kinds of music; and a huge mirrored ball that descends at midnight. All proceeds from the Nutty Nutcracker performance and New Year's Eve Party benefit MADD and SADD (Mothers-Students Against Drunk Driving).
Ticket prices for the Nutcracker performance on December 13 at 8 p.m., are normally $32, but are just $25 with this special offer, plus a $1 handling fee) The mail-in deadline is December 4, so don't wait. Join us for the traditional holiday spirit.
The Nutty Nutcracker regular price is also $32, with a special price to Chronicle readers of just $25, plus $1 handling fee. You must purchase tickets to this show in order to attend the New Year's Eve Party, which is an additional $30 ($55 total). Mail-in deadline is December 26.
Either night is a marvelous choice of entertainment and fun. See the coupon on page 5 to place your order.▼
275 enjoy Sistahparty/WBP Halloween party at Civic
by S. K. Bair
Over 275 participants enjoyed good music, attractive decorations, and the opportunity to have their future told at the first Sistahparty-Women's Building Project (WBP) Halloween Party held on Saturday, October 24, at the Civic in Cleveland Heights.
In addition to Susan Kreinbrook-created decorations and tarot card reading by psychic Karen Hale-Brewer, party-goers could participate in a wheel-of-fortune type give-

Mistinguette Smith-Malone, spokeswoman for Sistahparty and the WBP for this event, said that several women took the time to comment on how well the party was organized. Although feedback from attendees was positive, Smith-Malone said that most were unaware that such an extensive
night of entertainment was planned; promotional advertisements for the event failed to communicate the addition of various booths and entertainment.
At press time, accounting for the event is not complete, but profits will be split equally between Sistahparty and the WBP. The WBP, using this event primarily to broaden
